Services
The service was launched on a trial basis in February 2020, as part of the national Housing First initiative to provide intensive, personalised recovery and preventative support for those experiencing or at risk of homelessness. Following the success of the pilot, a second dedicated A2Dominion outreach officer will now be recruited, providing more support for homeless people in Spelthorne.
During the last year the outreach programme helped one resident to avoid eviction and into a secure tenancy, where they benefited from furniture donated by local charities. Another person was helped to clear around £8,000 of debt and arrears.
A2Dominion staff, along with a multi-agency team including probation, mental health and social services, also supported several people with substance misuse issues, who have insecure living arrangements, into recovery programmes.
Jo Evans, Director of Supported Housing at A2Dominion, said: “I’m delighted that this very important partnership is able to continue for at least another year. We’re very proud of the work we’ve done so far in Spelthorne to combat homelessness and other social issues in collaboration with the council, and with a second full-time member of staff dedicated to the programme I’m looking forward to achieving even more.”
Karen Sinclair and Deborah Ashman, Joint Group Heads for Community Wellbeing at Spelthorne Borough Council, said: “We are pleased to be able to extend the Housing First service with our primary local housing partner. The success of the first year of the scheme is evident and as we work to support our community to recover from Covid-19, this additional resource will support some of the most vulnerable members of our community to live a life away from the streets.”
The project was initially funded by part of a Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government (MHCLG) grant; awarded as part of the government’s rough sleeping initiative. The funding for this year will be provided by Spelthorne Borough Council.
As well as the services in Spelthorne, A2Dominion also runs schemes for homeless people in Oxford, including Matilda House. A2Dominion’s student accommodation at Canterbury House in Oxford is also currently being used to house homeless people from across the city.
Additionally, A2Dominion runs the Ealing Homelessness Service and provides more than 200 units of accommodation for homelessness initiatives in West London.
